Ministry of Agriculture proposes to UNFAO to declare 2019 as ‘International Year of Millets’
The Union Minister of Agricultur and Farmers’ Welfare, Radha Mohan Singh on August 16, 2018 wrote to Jose Graziano da Silva, the Director General of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation (UNFAO) to declare the upcoming year as the ‘International Year of Millets’. Singh stressed on the need to draw wider global attention and action to promote cultivation of millets. The Union Agriculture Minister also stated in the letter that India is celebrating 2018 as the ‘National Year of Millets’ to promote cultivation by amending cropping pattern
of areas which are especially susceptible to climate change. The Union Government had
decided to declare 2018 as ‘National Year of Millets’ in March 2018 to boost the cultivation of millets like ragi and jowar on a mission mode to achieve nutritional security. The Move came after the Ministry
noted that the millet cultivation in India has declined due to change in dietary habits and unavailability of
millets. As a result of this, level of nutrients like
proteins, Vitamin-A, iron and iodine have fell in women and children.
